01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

A flight of stairs down into a basement in Kita-Shinagawa leads to Horumon-yaki Monmon Kita-Shinagawa (ホルモン焼もんもん 北品川店), where diners are met with appetizing smoke and an energetic room. The restaurant's core appeal lies in its casual, unpretentious atmosphere paired with notably generous portions of yakiniku and offal.

A good place to start the grill is the beef tongue, one of the house signatures. Diners can explore contrasting textures across cuts, from thick-cut tongue that releases savory depth with each bite to salt-sauce-seasoned tongue base (tan-moto) and the firmer tongue tip (tan-saki). Standard cuts also deliver dependable satisfaction, including tender beef skirt steak (harami), marbled short rib (karubi), and premium tokujo karubi, all served in hearty single-order portions that pair naturally with steamed rice and drinks.

A Diverse Range of Seasonings and Offal Cuts

True to the horumon in its name, the restaurant offers an extensive offal lineup that should not be overlooked. Guests can tailor their orders by flavor profile, choosing crisp and refreshing salt-sauce options like premium mino (beef first stomach) and crunchy throat cartilage (nodo nankotsu), or richer miso-glazed cuts including shochan (small intestine), tetchan (large intestine), and cylindrical shirokoro horumon. Cleanly prepped beef liver for the grill and Wagyu heart are also on offer, making it satisfying to grill each cut slowly over the wire mesh while comparing textures and natural richness.

The drinks menu covers a wide spectrum, from chilled draft beer and shochu highballs to a curated list of premium shochu and wine. Side dishes such as kimchi platters, namul, pork stomach sashimi (gatsu-sashi), and crisp green onion salads provide palate-cleansing contrast throughout the meal.

Well suited for informal get-togethers and group dinners, the restaurant fills up quickly in the evening, making an advance reservation advisable for a smooth visit.
